It employs more than 1,000 people working on creating leading-edge technologies in the fields of professional, military and secure communications. This experience has been translated into a comprehensive catalogue of products, systems and turn-key solutions for land, naval, air, professional and civil communications applications.

Further, substantial investment in the company's R&D laboratories will further increase its focus on the emerging challenges that the market faces. Some of the key research lines of development include software radio, wide-band wireless networks, All-IP advanced networks solutions, ad hoc networks and nanotechnologies.This R&D strategy has produced a wide range of new technology and product research activities aimed at designing and delivering fully market-driven solutions.

 

Innovation and research are two areas in which Finmeccanica excels. At corporate level, the business has launched an Intellectual Property Governance programme to optimise the innovation process across the Group, and SELEX Communications is actively engaged in numerous initiatives. In 2008, the Group invested 1.8 billion euros in R&D, some 12% of its revenue. It has 16,000 engineers, 13,200 employees working on design and development and 5,100 skilled staff involved in research & development.
