SELEX Communications represents the convergence of all of Finmeccanica's manufacturing activities in the telecommunication sector.  Our history is about telecommunication solutions, for all activities and requirements.  We belong to a larger family, the "SELEX" family, which summarizes Finmeccanica's defense electronics activities.

At SELEX Communications, we are proud of our heritage, rich in communications and defense electronics industry innovation.We entered the business world at the turn of the 20th century, when the Chiefs of Staff of Defense understood the importance that radio communications would play in future military operations. Throughout the years the company diversified its activities - to include professional mobile radio, space, avionics, command and control systems, networks for terrestrial and naval applications and more - and expanded globally to become a multinational company that generates roughly half of its income on the international market.  Today, SELEX Communications is a global supplier of advanced mission-critical communications, navigation and identification solutions to protect communities and critical national infrastructure that generates roughly one-half of its turnover on the international market.

Avionics

SELEX Communications offers a very flexible and extended capability in products and system integration gained in more than 40 years collaboration with the major aircraft manufacturers.

With a complete portfolio of CNI (Communication, Navigation and Identification) and Mission Support integrated equipment and systems, SELEX Communications offers a wide range of avionics solutions for both fixed and rotary wing aircraft for different operational requirements including combat, transport and search and rescue.
SELEX Communications provides also a range of identification equipment and systems, called "IFF" ("Identification Friend or Foe"), which satisfies the most recent NATO and civil aviation standards, like Mode 5 and Mode S.

Furthermore the Company designs and produces other avionics systems such as Laser Warning receivers, Crash recorders, and Store Management Systems and it is involved in Display and Control Panels production.

SELEX Communications equipment, systems and networks assure interoperability in a high level digitalized battlefield with NATO forces, military helicopters, maritime strike/attack aircraft, AEW/AWACS, other MPA, friendly land forces, and NATO Maritime Headquarters, also during Peace Keeping operation.

Thanks to its technical and commercial program management capabilities and its continuous process of technological innovation, SELEX Communications is a partner in many major European and international aeronautical co-operation programmes.

Today SELEX Communications avionics fly on some of the most advanced aircraft worldwide, from AWACS and C-27J/C-130J to Eurofighter and JSF, from Agusta Bell Helicopters to NH-90 and EH 101.

 

Military & Space

SELEX communications is recognized worldwide for its advanced, field proven, fully integrated military communications solutions for strategic, tactical, naval and satellite applications.

Our state of the art solutions are particularly suitable to satisfy the requirements of communications in hostile environments such as peacekeeping, emergencies, armed conflicts and other similar situations where secure and reliable communications are essential to ensure success during operations.

Our land and satellite systems and networks meet challenging C2 requirements supplying the transmission of voice, video and data and are fully integrated and fully interoperable with the new network centric warfare architectures. Designed to offer maximum level of robustness and reliability, they are capable to withstand to difficult environmental conditions and to electromagnetic disturbance, either jamming or noise.

Flexibility is a point of strength of our solutions: in the event of overloading, failure or partial destruction of the communication system or network, sophisticated routing mechanisms reconfigure the network and re-route communications to ensure their survival.

Inter-operability with other communications equipment, systems and networks is always assured by virtue of their compliance with international military standards

SELEX Communications boasts a wide experience in the naval sector. We supplied naval communications solutions to Italian Navy and Royal Navy ships since 1896 and we are today a leading global supplier of modern fully integrated communications systems suitable for a wide variety of naval platforms.

 

Professional Communications

SELEX Communications provides secure and interoperable mobile networks, using TETRA and DMR technologies, which are destined to the Professional Mobile market.  They are integrated with new-generation broadband wireless technologies, with the aim of setting up multi-technological access networks capable of guaranteeing user connectivity as well as to ensure the security of their communications' contents, privacy and processes. SELEX Communications is able to perform this task in a transparent way and in every situation.

A wide range of technologies for emergency communications, which guarantee that those who operate in the field of citizens and environment protection are provided with the most valuable solutions to ensure their own safety as well as that of the operations they carry out. As far as Italy is concerned, SELEX Communications is implementing a TETRA-based national mobile network designed for Polizia di Stato (Italian State Police), Carabinieri, Polizia Penitenziaria (Penitentiary Police), Corpo Forestale Italiano (Italian Forest Brigades) and Guardia di Finanza (Customs Police). The supply by SELEX Communications of over 100 mobile systems in more than 30 countries clearly demonstrates that the high quality and performance of the systems provided by the Company are appreciated all over the world.

SELEX Communications has developed a set of customized telecoms systems devoted to companies operating in the mass transport business. As far as energy companies are concerned, SELEX Communications provides them with solutions designed to operate in highly explosive environments and to perform telemetric detection analyses.  In respect to emerging technologies and broadband connectivity, SELEX Communications offers a complete range of BWA systems devoted to telecoms operators, the civil industry and the Public Administration.

The Company has also a long experience in the GSM-R mobile communications business, managing and controlling Railway and Mass Transit traffic. As to the Air Traffic Management sector, SELEX Communications' know-how in developing air traffic control systems for air-ground communications spans well over 35 years.

 

Telecommunications Operators

SELEX Communications develops and supplies multi-access broadband communication solutions that integrate existing information and communication solutions.

The Company offers a complete set of Broadband Wireless Access based equipment (Wi-Fi, HiperLan, and WiMAX) suitable for civil applications (Telecom Operators, Public Administration, etc.)

WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a wireless technology for broadband voice and data transmission that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use and able to provide coverage to vast areas.  WiMAX can be integrated with other communication solutions and help to overcome their limitations in terms of coverage. The technology supports both real-time and non-real-time applications such as file transfer, database access, Intranet, Internet, video transmission and VoIP calls.

SELEX Communications' WiMAX provides broadband services to remote areas that are not covered by terrestrial broadband networks, bridging the Digital Divide in disadvantaged or neglected areas, providing last mile broadband services in urban and rural areas.

Principal Member the WiMAX Forum, SELEX Communications successfully tested the technology in Italy between the years 2005 and 2006, deploying several networks over a wide range of topology and providing coverage to urban, rural and mountainous areas.
